Delhi: Robbers dreamt of lakhs, ended up with Rs. 5
Tough luck struck a gang of five who planned to rob a businessman, who they thought was carrying lakhs in his bloated up bag, but instead landed up with just Rs. 5. The East Delhi businessman was returning home when he was robbed, but his bag contained only clothes and tiffin-box. Interestingly, he was carrying Rs. 10,000 in his pockets, which they didn't target.
The businessman's fat transaction slips lured Khalid, the main player
The main conspirator, 35-year-old Ifthekaar Khalid, was a regular customer of this businessman, who ran a foam and jacket material manufacturing factory in Maujpur. Khalid had observed that businessmen of this area usually carried lakhs on their way back home, but the 43-year-old Shahdara resident didn't follow this practice, which Khalid didn't know. The businessman's fat transaction slips lured Khalid to hatch the plan.
Khalid, accomplices attacked bizman, threw chili power, snatched bag
On May 26, when the businessman was almost home, bike-borne Khalid and four of his friends attacked him around 9.35PM. They threw chili powder at him, fired in the air and snatched the bag. "He expected the businessman to carry home Rs. 25-30L in cash. A thick bag carried by him further raised his hopes of a big loot," said Meghana Yadav, DCP (Shahdara).
They even stole his scooter hoping for cash in storage
"I requested them to return a transaction slip that was inside my bag, but they refused," said the businessman. They robbed his scooter as well "hoping that there would be cash in its storage unit." However, when they opened the bag and the vehicle storage, they got their biggest shock. "All they found inside was a five rupee coin," said the DCP.
'They couldn't even sell the scooter in three months'
Yadav said since the robbers weren't seasoned, they couldn't even sell the scooter in three months. The scooter was recovered and the two were arrested on Wednesday, while the rest three have been identified by special staff of Shahdara district police. A case of robbery has been registered at Anand Vihar police station. They may face 10 years of rigorous imprisonment if convicted.
