Heroic act: Auto-driver sacrifices own life to save woman, child
Little did auto-rickshaw driver Pawan Shah know that jumping into a canal in Delhi to save the lives of a woman and her baby would turn fatal for him. Pawan left his auto, jumped into water to save woman
On his way home, Pawan saw the woman who was carrying a baby in her arms and was standing on the edge of a bridge on the Meethapur canal. In a moment, he saw the woman jumping off the bridge, police said today. Without a second thought, Pawan left his auto, and jumped into the water to save the woman and the baby.
Strong current in the canal had swept Pawan away
Pawan also shouted and asked for help. Three men who were passing by saw Pawan and the woman and formed a human chain to save them. They saved the mother-son duo from drowning but when they went to rescue Pawan, it was too late as the strong current had already taken him away, Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) said.
Even after four-day search, Pawan's body is still missing
The three men, Rajveer, Jamil and Sanjeev, informed Jaitpur police station about the incident, and police soon rushed to the spot and started a search for Pawan. However, even after four days, the search is underway as his body could not be found, the senior officer said. The rescued woman and her son were taken to a hospital and their condition is stable.
Police to recommend Pawan's name for 'Jiwan Raksha' bravery award
During the inquiry, police found that the woman tried to commit suicide along with her baby after she had a fight with her husband. Honoring Pawan's bravery act, the police official said his name will be recommended for the 'Jiwan Raksha' bravery award.
