Delhi airport to get pure air, courtesy 35,000 plants!
Setting a 'green' standard, Delhi airport officials have planted a whopping 35,000 plants in the interiors of the building. These plants come with a specialty: they can filter out air pollutants. Officials said the plants have also raised aesthetics to a whole new level. These serve much better than commercial air purifiers, which are expensive and harm the environment, they said.
Mix of foliage and flowering plants, chosen based on characteristics
The whole bunch of plants placed inside is a mix of foliage and flowering trees, carefully chosen according to their characteristics. While spider plants act against benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene, weeping figs fight out pollutants like benzene and trichloroethylene, usually found in carpets and furniture. Some others which have been planted are Golden Shower tree, devil-tree, and snake plants.
Not just inside, the plants also beautify IGI's outside
The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), through a Twitter video, elaborated that the plants are first nurtured in their nursery and then placed within the airport premises. Not just the inside, numerous plants and shrubs beautify nearly 3.9 million square feet of area within the IGI premises. "This initiative (has) significantly improved the air quality," said a DIAL spokesperson.

Environmentalists hail the move, say will benefit in the future
The plants at the airport have moderated temperatures and contributed to reduction in water wastage. DIAL officials and other authorities are constantly monitoring the air quality at the airport and its vicinities. Environmentalists have hailed the move, saying this will benefit the airport and the city in the long run. Significantly, IGI is also India's first airport to commission a solar power plant.
