Airtel may cut ties with Delhi Half Marathon over pollution-issue
Delhi Half Marathon title sponsor Airtel has hinted to pull out its decade-long association with the annual event from next year unless the rising concerns of air pollution are not immediately addressed. The Indian Medical Association has written to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanding cancellation of the race which is scheduled on November 19, due to high levels of air pollution.
Airtel sponsoring the race for the past nine years
Airtel has been a proud supporter of the Delhi Half Marathon over the last 9 years, making it an integral part of the city and calling all citizens to celebrate the spirit of running. But as a responsible brand, Airtel may reconsider supporting the event if the "authorities" refuse to address the serious issue of air pollution urgently.
Organizers' reaction on the issue
The organizers, Procam International, claimed to made sure that the event is conducted with all necessary and important safety guidelines in place as per international standards. However, to minimize the dust pollution, a team of professionals is being deployed to sprinkle effluent treated water mixed with salt across the entire track. Furthermore, no vehicles will be plying on the route of the marathon.
