AIIMS-doctor makes wrong treatment, then manipulates documents to hide mistake
A senior doctor attached with AIIMS-Delhi is likely to face stiff action for performing a wrong procedure on a patient and then manipulating the documents to conceal his fault. The doctor, also an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery with the institute, performed dialysis on a 30-year-old woman who did not have any kidney problems and was admitted for only abdominal pain.
She had no kidney complications, yet the doctor performed dialysis
In February, Rekha Devi was admitted to the premier medical hospital complaining of abdominal pain caused by complications from an earlier surgery done in her Bihar hometown of Saharsa. She was administered local anaesthesia and taken to operation theatre for an abdominal investigation. The doctor then made an AV fistula, and performed a dialysis treatment next day, though Rekha had no kidney complications.
What is AV fistula?
An arteriovenous (AV) fistula is a vascular procedure wherein a vein is created surgically to remove and return blood during hemodialysis. Used in patients suffering from kidney disease, an AV graft is a looped, plastic tube that connects an artery to a vein.
Mistake noted in nursing report book, but not in patient-records
The surgeon then carried out a corrective procedure the next day but didn't mention the faux pas in the patient record. However, it was found in the nursing report book. An inquiry ordered by medical superintendent Dr DK Sharma has already indicted the doctor and he has been asked to withdraw from all clinical work. Another inquiry has been ordered by the AIIMS director.
