Delhi Ola, Uber drivers strike today. Encouraged by Mumbai 'success'?
Probably getting encouraged by the 'success' of the Mumbai strike, Ola and Uber drivers of Delhi have decided to launch a 'large-scale' 24-hour strike on Friday. Their key demands are better compensation, streamlining shared duties and an improved process of driver verification. The MNS transport wing had called a cab drivers' strike in Mumbai on March 19 that lasted for three days.
Why strike? 'One-third of promised amount being paid to drivers'
"We are carrying out a large scale protest against the aggregators as they are paying one-third of the promised amount to the drivers," said Kamaljeet Gill, president, Sarvodaya Drivers Association, NCR's main cab drivers' union. The strike, he said, will be temporary and would last for 24 hours. Some cab drivers started observing the strike from Thursday itself, causing major inconvenience to commuters.
There is no strike in Delhi/NCR: Ola and Uber
Meanwhile, both the companies have denied any strike. "We have heard about the strike by driver partners in Delhi through media. As of now, it is business as usual for us in Delhi-NCR," an Ola spokesperson said. Uber spokesperson said that there is no disruption in cab services, adding that "we are committed to ensuring driver-partners can continue to access a stable income."
MNS had called for a nation-wide strike, Delhi didn't join!
Though MNS had called for a nation-wide indefinite strike of Ola and Uber drivers, it was mostly observed in Mumbai and didn't affect other cities, including Delhi. Just a day after the Mumbai leaders called the strike outcome a 'victory,' Delhi cab drivers followed suit.
