The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is among the most competitive exams for engineering graduates, including for those wanting to study abroad. A national-level exam, it also enables students to attend postgraduate courses in top universities including IITs, NITs, etc. in India. If you are willing to study in a foreign country, here's how taking the GATE exam can help.
List of foreign universities that accept GATE scores
Apart from educational institutions in India, the GATE scores are accepted by four foreign universities for admission of candidates to postgraduate courses as the examination has international recognition too. The four foreign universities that consider GATE scores include the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, Technical University of Munich, and RWTH Aachen in Germany.
Basic eligibility criteria for admission in foreign universities
These above foreign universities admit only those Indian students who have cleared GATE and scored at least 90 percentile in it. Apart from this, candidates must appear for IELTS or TOEFL and obtain a good score to determine their English proficiency. They should also have a good percentage/CGPA in their bachelor's degree course. However, the selection process may vary from one university to another.
Validity of GATE score for admission in foreign universities
The GATE score of a candidate is valid for up to three years for admission to postgraduate programs offered by Indian educational institutions. Similarly, these foreign universities also consider the GATE score of a student for admission for up to three years.
National University of Singapore (NUS)
The NUS is one of the world's best universities, ranked 11th in the latest QS World University Rankings. Eligible GATE-qualified candidates can apply for research-based MS (1-3 years) or PhD (2-5 years) programs. Application forms for international candidates are available in mid-October every year. Interested students can enroll themselves on the official NUS website. The tuition fees range from SGD 10,000-17,220/year (Rs. 5-8.5 lakh).
Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
Singapore's NTU is another top university that is also ranked 11th in the QS World University Rankings. It admits eligible GATE qualifiers to Master of Engineering (MEng) and PhD programs. The application process at NTU is held in August and January. Candidates are required to apply online on the official website. NTU yearly charges tuition fees of SGD 10,000-17,220 (approximately Rs. 5-8.5 lakh).
Technical University of Munich in Germany
The Technical University of Munich is another good university that admits students to PG courses (engineering/technical) based on their GATE scores. It is ranked 55th in the QS World University Rankings. Candidates having a valid GATE score and a bachelor's degree in a relevant field can apply on the official website. The university charges a tuition fee of €500 (around Rs. 38,000) per semester.
RWTH Aachen University
The RWTH Aachen University in Germany also accepts GATE scores for admission to its postgraduate courses. It is ranked 138th in the QS World University Rankings. Eligible GATE-qualified candidates with a good score in the bachelor's degree can join various engineering/technical courses offered by the university on its official website. The tuition fee for PG courses is €240 (approximately Rs. 18,000) per semester.
