IIM Ahmedabad tops India's higher education institution space
A recent report by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) on May 13 indicates that Indian universities are experiencing a decline in performance due to increased global competition from well-funded institutions. However, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad emerged as the top-performing institute in India. Additionally, 64 other universities from India were listed in the 2024 edition of the Global 2000 ranking.
Mixed ranking results reflect varied institutional performances
IIM Ahmedabad notably improved its position by climbing 9 spots to rank 410th, while the Indian Institute of Science dropped 7 places to claim the 501st position. The report highlights that India's rise in research output hasn't translated into comparable higher education success. However, analyzing the ranking reveals a mixed performance among Indian institutions this year: 33 experienced a decline while 32 showed improvement.
IIT Bombay drops, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur shine
The leading Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bombay dropped 14 spots to rank 568th. However, IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur were among the top ten best performers. of the year. IIT Madras fell 12 spots to secure the 582nd position, while the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research descended 26 spots to claim the 606th rank.
Concerns over India's educational standing
Dr. Nadim Mahassen, President of the Center for World University Rankings, expressed concern about India's educational standing, noting it is facing increasing pressure due to the rise of higher education systems globally. He mentioned that although India's global share in scientific research increased by 24% over the past five years, this growth hasn't translated into comparable success in higher education.
Harvard continues global dominance
The top-ten global higher education institutions, renowned for their academic excellence, include Harvard University, MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, Oxford, Princeton, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Yale, and Caltech. Harvard University maintains its global dominance for the 13th consecutive year as the top-performing institute worldwide. Meanwhile, Chinese educational institutions shine, with 95% of them advancing due to significant investments in research and development.

The top 10 Indian higher education institutions ranked globally include the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad at 410th, Indian Institute of Science at 501st, IIT Bombay at 568th, IIT Madras at 582nd, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at 606th, IIT Delhi at 616th, Delhi University at 622nd, IIT Kharagpur at 704th, Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research at 798th, and Punjab University at 823rd.
CWUR's data-driven university ranking methodology
The report evaluates universities worldwide using 62 million outcome-based data points, assessing quality of education (25%), employability (25%), faculty quality (10%), and research (40%), ultimately ranking 20,966 institutions from 94 countries in the top Global 2000 list. Since 2012, CWUR has been publishing the sole academic ranking of global universities without relying on surveys or university data submissions.
