Government is planning to make all electricity meters 'smart'
The government is planning to make all electricity meters 'smart' and 'prepaid' in the next three years to revolutionize the whole billing system. The authorities are also mulling to make these meters mandatory after a particular date. Smart meters will also act as a catalyst in helping the government achieve its target of universal household electrification under the Saubhagya scheme, by the end of this year.
Smart meters will bring a revolution in the power sector
"Smart meters will revolutionize the power sector by way of reduced AT&C (aggregate technical and commercial) losses, better health of DISCOMs, incentivization of energy conservation and ease of bill payments etc. Further, it will generate employment for skilled youth," the government has said.
Other government initiatives in the energy sector
The government has also announced the implementation of Rs. 1.4 lakh crore worth KUSUM (Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahaabhiyan) scheme from next month to encourage farmers to make use of solar energy. Under the scheme, the government has planned to provide farmers with 27.5 lakh solar pumps, of which 17.50 lakh will be standalone and the remaining 10 lakh will have grid connectivity.
