Why is Apple hiring so many designers?
Apple job openings seem to hint at something brewing at Apple Park. According to analytics company Thinknum, Apple has dramatically increased its hiring rate of product designers recently. Normally, a slight spike in employment opportunities wouldn't be too much of a deal, but Thinknum says that the "uptick is sever" and the "job titles are telling".
The numbers tell the story
Typically, Apple lists around 40 job openings at most for designers on its Careers page, but that number has started going up. In fact, last month itself, the Careers page showed 70 new openings for designers. Thinknum is of the opinion that the surge in employment of designer has something to do with the iPhone and virtual assistant Siri.
Apple is keeping a lid on whatever is going on
The Thinknum study said that Apple was also looking for "optical engineers" and "motion scientists", both of which hints at something going on with the augmented reality (AR) headset Apple is said to be working on. Of course, Apple's not open to discussing its employment policy, and did not respond to the Fortune magazine's request for a comment on the surge in employment.
Meanwhile, Apple also recently announced expansion plans
A week ago, Apple announced plans to build another campus at a "new location". While details are scarce, Apple said that it would hire 20,000 people in the next five years and contribute $350 billion to the US economy. In 2017, Tim Cook had discussed plans to build a $1.375 billion data centre in Waukee, Iowa. It's unclear whether the two are the same.
