Viagogo denies association with BookMyShow amid Coldplay ticket controversy
Viagogo, a leading ticket resale platform, has refuted claims of any association with BookMyShow. This clarification comes in light of an ongoing investigation by the Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), into the exorbitant pricing of tickets for Coldplay's upcoming concerts. The company emphasized that it functions solely as a marketplace for individuals to resell tickets, and not in partnership with any other entity.
Viagogo clarifies ticket sourcing amid controversy
A representative from Viagogo clarified to The Indian Express, "Viagogo is not working with BookMyShow. Tickets listed on our platform come from various sources, including multinational event organizers, corporate ticket holders, season ticket holders, sponsors and fans unable to attend." This statement was issued following a wave of complaints about alleged black marketing and inflated ticket prices for Coldplay's Mumbai concerts scheduled for January 18, 19 and 21 in 2025.
Coldplay concert ticket sale sparks controversy
The controversy began when fans faced difficulties purchasing tickets for the highly anticipated Coldplay concerts. Many were logged out of the booking system just as tickets went on sale, while others encountered long virtual queues. The situation worsened when tickets surfaced on Viagogo and other secondary platforms at significantly inflated prices, some listings even reaching up to ₹7 lakh for tickets initially priced around ₹12,500.
Legal action initiated against BookMyShow
The escalating situation led Mumbai lawyer Amit Vyas to file a complaint against BookMyShow, accusing the platform of engaging in black-market practices with scalpers. Following these allegations, senior officials from Big Tree Entertainment Private Limited, the parent company of BookMyShow, have been summoned by the EOW for questioning.
Viagogo asserts compliance with Indian law
In response to the controversy, Viagogo has reassured fans of its commitment to adhering to Indian law. The spokesperson emphasized, "Our platform is fully compliant with Indian law, as it is in all markets where we operate. We take our legal obligations seriously and cooperate fully with any relevant authority during investigations." The company also clarified that ticket prices on its platform are determined by sellers based on market demand.
