
UPI goes down for users across India, payments disrupted
What's the story
Users across different apps in India have reported a major disruption in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services.
According to DownDetector, a website that monitors outages, there have been 2,750 complaints regarding this issue till 7:50pm today.
Google Pay and Paytm users have filed 296 and 119 complaints respectively, while the SBI platform saw a total of 376 user complaints.
User reactions
Users express frustration over outage
The outage has triggered a flurry of complaints from users on social media.
One user was surprised to have experienced UPI downtime for the first time, saying, "For the first time in my life I've experienced UPI downtime."
Another user expressed his frustration saying, "What is this Nonsense.?? UPI not Working. My Money is debited but Not credited to My friend account @UPI_NPCI."

UPI's significance in India's digital payments
UPI forms an integral part of India's digital payment ecosystem, making up 80% of the country's retail payments.
Just in January, UPI transactions crossed 16.99 billion with a value of over ₹23.48 lakh crore, the highest monthly figures recorded till now according to Finance Ministry data.
The outage comes at a time when the digital payments landscape is booming in FY24-25.
