Uber to relaunch autorickshaw services, intensifying battle with Ola
Global ride-hailing major Uber is relaunching its "Auto" services in India nearly two years after shutting down the autorickshaw offering. Uber will initially offer auto services in Bengaluru and Pune, reportedly in the second-half of January. Its move is aimed at grabbing a bigger chunk of market share at a time it's locked in an intense battle with home-grown cab aggregator Ola. Here's more.
Uber expected to rollout "Auto" services in Delhi, Mumbai
Uber's spokesperson stated: "Auto rickshaws are ubiquitous to mobility options in many Indian cities. To expand transportation choices for our riders, we are excited to launch Auto in Bengaluru and Pune." The spokesperson added, "Gradual geographical expansion like this is common to how we operate in cities around the world and it is something that we are looking at very closely."
How does the Uber AUTO work?
Uber spokesperson said that users would be able to book an autorickshaw directly through the AUTO option that will be available in its app. The spokesperson also added that the AUTO service would provide all the safety features that are available for regular Uber cab services. Also, riders will have an option to pay via cash, debit/credit cards, or Paytm for auto rides.
Will on-board licensed, existing auto drivers: Uber spokesperson
The Uber spokesperson stated they will hire only licensed and existing autorickshaw drivers who are screened and accredited by the concerned authorities. Also, every auto driver partner on Uber AUTO will have to submit valid government documents before getting access to Uber app.
Uber rival Ola offers auto services in 73 cities
India is one of the biggest and most important markets for Uber. It has seen substantial growth in India where it is in a head-to-head race with local player Ola. Ola also offers auto booking service in India; it was launched in Bengaluru and Chennai in 2014. Ola Auto is available in 73 Indian cities; over 1.2 lakh autorickshaws are reportedly associated with Ola.
