TRAI silences over 2.75 lakh spam callers in 14 days
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken stringent action against spam calls and messages in the past two weeks. This crackdown has resulted in over 50 entities being blacklisted and more than 2.75 lakh mobile numbers and telecom resources being disconnected. "These steps are expected to have a significant impact on reducing spam calls and providing relief to consumers," TRAI stated in a recent announcement.
TRAI's new directives target unregistered telemarketers
On August 13, TRAI issued strict directives to telecom access providers, ordering them to immediately halt promotional voice calls from unregistered telemarketers using telecom resources. The new regulations aim to curb spam and enhance consumer telecom experiences. Unregistered telemarketers misusing telecom resources were warned of potential disconnection for up to two years and blacklisting.
TRAI's response to rising complaints against unregistered telemarketers
The directives were issued in response to over 7.9 lakh complaints lodged against unregistered telemarketers in the first half of 2024. TRAI noted a significant surge in spam calls, with a high number of grievances reported against Unregistered Telemarketers (UTMs). To address this issue, TRAI recently implemented new rules instructing all access providers to cease promotional calls from unregistered sources using various telecom technologies like SIP and PRI.
TRAI's crackdown aims to improve telecom experience
TRAI's crackdown is aimed at reducing spam calls and improving the telecom experience for consumers. Access providers have begun adhering to TRAI's rules, which should provide much-needed relief from spam calls. TRAI is urging all parties involved to comply with these new regulations in order to facilitate a spam-free communication environment.
