TikTok beats WhatsApp to become world's most-downloaded app in January
Chinese social media app TikTok has beaten WhatsApp to become the most-downloaded app in the month of January, according to the latest figures from research firm Sensor Tower. The short-video app surpassed the Facebook-owned messaging platform by recording over 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store as well as Apple's App store in January this year.
TikTok recorded 46% YoY growth
According to the Sensor Tower data, TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin, were downloaded 104 million times in January. With these figures, ByteDance-owned app recorded a stunning 46% growth over the same period last year. In comparison to the total downloads in December 2019, the app registered an impressive 27% month-over-month growth.
India, Brazil and the US were TikTok's top three markets
As per the data, the top three markets for TikTok downloads in January 2020 were India, Brazil and the United States. However, on the whole, the total downloads could be even higher considering the data doesn't include downloads on third-party Android platforms.
Douyin and TikTok generated over $28 million in January
Douyin and TikTok's global revenue reached $39.4 million in December last year but dropped to $28.6 million in January despite the increased app downloads. However, that is still the third-highest revenue-generating month for ByteDance after December and November 2019. As for in-app purchase revenue, China accounted for 84.5% of the total in-app revenue while the US market contributed just over 10% in January.
Duoyin in-app purchases have also improved
In China, Duoyin saw a decline in its in-app purchases during the initial days of the month but recovered during the Spring Festival holidays which started on January 23. In comparison to Spring Festival 2019, Duoyin's in-app purchases were 18.7 times higher this year.
