Now, TikTok has over a billion downloads on Play Store
As the world stays indoors to fight the outbreak of COVID-19, the disease that started spreading from Wuhan and has claimed over one lakh lives, Chinese video-sharing giant TikTok is reaping the benefits. According to a report in Android Police, the platform has achieved a major milestone and joined the elite club of apps with more than one billion downloads. Here's all about it.
Growth due to COVID-19 lockdown
Though TikTok has long been a preferred source of entertainment, the one billion milestone comes in the wake of increased usage of the service due to the lockdowns enforced to contain COVID-19. It has been going against Facebook's Lasso, Instagram, and LIKE Video by letting users share and stream short-form videos that are lip-synced with popular songs, movie dialogs.
Last month, TikTok was second most-downloaded free app
On Android, the growth of TikTok has been such that the service has been topping the monthly download charts for months. At the end of February, it was the third most-downloaded free app on the Play Store. Then, a month later, when people were rushing to use video apps, TikTok was still raking in downloads, rising to the spot of the second most-installed app.
TikTok had also reduced bandwidth amid growing traffic
The monthly growth of TikTok - and the latest one billion milestone - clearly shows that the platform is serving as a tool of entertainment for billions who have been put on lockdown. This also explains why the company took the decision to reduce the stream quality on its apps as part of a precautionary effort to prevent the internet infrastructure from being overloaded.
However, this journey hasn't been hiccup-free
TikTok's growth is phenomenal but it hasn't been an easy ride for the company, given that it was banned in India for encouraging pornography and has also been embroiled in cases of collecting data on kids and removing content critical of the Chinese government.
