Banks to remain closed for four working days this week
This week, we have four bank holidays to look forward to. Out of six working days, four of these holidays are specific to certain states. In July, however, banks will remain closed for a total of 15 days but don't worry, it won't disrupt your banking needs. ATMs, cash deposits, online banking, and mobile banking will be up and running as usual.
June 26 - Kharchi Puja
Today, all banks in Tripura are closed to celebrate Kharchi Puja. This special festival, known as the Festival of 14 Gods, generally happens on the eighth day of the new moon in July or August. This year, it started on June 26 and will continue until July 2. Kharchi Puja brings back ancient customs and traditions, attracting devotees from distant places.
June 28 - Eid-ul-Zuha
On 28 June, banks in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Jammu and Kashmir will be closed to observe Eid-ul-Zuha. Also known as Eid-al-Azha or Bakrid, it is an important celebration for Muslims worldwide. Lasting for three to four days, this major holiday honors the story of Ibrahim (Abraham) being willing to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.
June 29 - Eid-al-Adha
Several banks located in different cities across India will be closed on account of Eid-al-Adha. While the aforementioned regions observe Eid as per Saudi Arabia, the rest of India is observing Bakrid on June 29. These cities include Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Delhi, Patna, Panaji, Shillong, Ranchi, Shimla, and Srinagar.
June 30 - Remna Ni and Bakrid
On June 30, banks in Mizoram and Odisha will be closed to observe Remna Ni and Bakrid respectively. Remna Ni is a special public holiday in Mizoram, commemorating the signing of the Mizo Peace Accord in 1986. This historic agreement brought peace to the region, ending years of unrest and insurgency. It marked the beginning of a peaceful and stable era in Mizoram.
Types of bank holidays
There are two types of bank holidays in India: National holidays and government holidays. National holidays, including Republic Day, Independence Day, and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, result in nationwide closures of banks and financial institutions. Government holidays are further categorized into state government bank holidays and central government bank holidays, with the former varying among different states and the latter observed nationwide.
Bank holidays in July
In July this year, banks will be closed for a total of 15 days. Besides weekends, there are special occasions like Muharram, Guru Hargobind Ji's birthday, Ashoora, and Ker Pooja when banks will not operate. As per the RBI's list of holidays, eight holidays are state-specific for different festivals across different states and others are weekend holidays.
