Mahindra & Mahindra to make an affordable electric SUV
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has started working on what is being reported as the world's "most affordable electric SUV" through the Mahindra Electric unit, which was known earlier as Mahindra Reva. The SUV with an electric power train is codenamed 'S107' according to media reports. The electric compact SUV is Mahindra's next major project after the electric version of its Verito.
Combining the strengths of SUV and Reva
The idea of Mahindra & Mahindra is to combine the strength of its SUV expertise with that of Reva to make electric cars. The company that sells the entry-level E2O electric vehicle has showcased the Halo sportscar concept recently. Mahindra & Mahindra's Chief Executive for Automotive Pravin Shah has reportedly stated they were also considering electrification of the company's KUV model.
Preparing feverishly for the future of mobility
At Mahindra & Mahindra's 70th Annual General meeting, Chairman Anand Mahindra told the shareholders, "If anyone is preparing feverishly for a disruptive future of mobility, it is Mahindra".
Fresh boost to Mahindra Electric
Anand Mahindra said electric cars are a key element of preparing a disruptive future of mobility. He said Verito electric addresses the needs of a possible buyer while the electric compact SUV would cater to the needs of those keen on driving as an experience. The move is expected to give a fresh boost to Mahindra Electric that is currently focusing on global markets.
Pravin Shah's statement
"We are looking at adding more SUVs as well as small commercial vehicle to our electric vehicle portfolio. The focus will be on offering more affordable electric vehicles for higher accessibility. Mahindra Reva will continue to address the range anxiety with continuous development."
Mahindra & Mahindra's other plans
Mahindra is reportedly considering the possibility of a KUV CNG version. It is expecting annual sales of at least 6,000 units each for the CNG and electric versions of its KUV. According to experts, the electric version of KUV could take over the market as the most affordable SUV. Mahindra Electric is focused on selling E2O to fleet operators while testing its four-door variant.
Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra form a consortium
Ford India is also reportedly considering a hybrid-electric powertrain version of the all-new EcoSport planned for somewhere around 2020-21. Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, and Mahindra formed a consortium for developing certain components for hybrid and electric cars and making then more accessible and affordable for buyers. However, Ford had dropped out of the group as it was exploring the EcoSport electric option.
