Google: 80 percent of Indian Internet users browse YouTube
Google-owned YouTube is now being accessed by 80 percent of Internet users, across all-age groups, in India. YouTube highlighted its growth over the last decade at "Brandcast 2018" event as the company celebrated its 10th anniversary in India. The company has attributed its success to the increasing penetration of smartphones, affordability of high-speed data and the growing availability of content. Here are the details.
Ever-growing availability of content drives YouTube's growth
"We now have more than 300 channels with over a million subscribers, from just 16 channels in 2014. We will continue to invest in programmes to support creators, and encourage more diversity and distribution of their content," said Robert Kyncl, Chief Business Officer, YouTube.
For YouTube, India is one of the fastest-growing markets
In India, there are 225 million monthly active users on mobile alone, making it one of the fastest-growing markets for YouTube. "For brands, YouTube is now an end-to-end platform. As per the December 2017 'ComScore Video Metrix Multi-Platform' it reaches 85% of all highly engaged internet users, in the 18 years and above age-group," said Rajan Anandan, Vice-President, South East Asia and India, Google.
YouTube's impact in India spans across all age groups
Growth of YouTube in India is not limited to just youth. "In India, YouTube is seeing incredible growth across all age groups, even amongst 55+ audience our reach stands at over 80%," said Sapna Chadha, Director Marketing, South East Asia and India, Google. Further, as per a recent report, the total number of online video consumers is expected to reach 500 million by 2020.
