Tesla just made its 100,000th Model 3, reaching new milestone
What's the story
Just a year after delivering merely 30 Model 3s, electric car-maker Tesla has reached the milestone of 100,000 cars.
The company, according to an Electrek source familiar with product volumes, manufactured its 100,000th Model 3 on October 13, becoming the fastest automaker in the EV history to make these many vehicles.
However, it still has a lot of ground to cover.
Here's more.
Details
5,000 Model 3s being produced every week
Tesla achieved the milestone after maintaining a production rate of 5,000 vehicles per week from the quarter ending September.
In fact, if we look at the overall production, including that of engineering and release candidate cars, the 100,000th Model 3 was produced earlier last week.
However, the company had not confirmed the milestone, as it usually reveals production at the end of quarters.
Do you know?
Model 3 is outselling other EVs
In the US, Tesla Model 3 is outselling electric cars from all major brands combined. In fact, it has also overtaken best-selling BMW and Mercedes cars in the luxury sedan segment.
Challenges
Still, production challenges lie ahead
Though Tesla has made a lot of progress compared to last year, it still has a long way to go.
Nearly 455,000 Model 3s have been pre-ordered since the start of deliveries, which means the company has to keep its rate of production and delivery as high as possible.
Considering the current rate, Bloomberg reports, Tesla will make 100,000 more vehicles in six months.
Information
Base Model 3 variant also coming
Notably, Tesla's production volumes will remain under hard scrutiny as it gears up to launch a new base variant of Model 3 by the end of this year. The $35,000 variant will help Tesla position itself as a mass-market EV maker.
