Tesla is now hiring in India
What's the story
In a major development, Tesla has launched a recruitment drive in India, indicating that the company is all set to enter the market.
The development comes just days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US.
The electric vehicle (EV) maker is now looking for candidates for 13 different roles, according to its LinkedIn page.
Job opportunities
Job openings span across Mumbai and Delhi
Tesla has listed a number of positions for its India operations. At least five of these roles, including service technician and other advisory positions, are available in both Mumbai and Delhi.
The other job openings like customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, are specifically for Mumbai.
This recruitment drive shows Tesla's strategic approach toward establishing its presence in key Indian cities.
Market entry
Tesla's entry follows reduced import duties
Tesla's move to enter the Indian market comes after years of sporadic talks between the company and the Indian government.
Earlier, high import duties had kept the EV maker from setting up shop in the South Asian nation.
However, India recently lowered its basic customs duty on high-end cars priced over $40,000 (around ₹35 lakh) from 110% to 70%, making it easier for Tesla to explore this market.
Potential
India's EV market potential for Tesla
Though still in its infancy compared to China, India's EV market offers Tesla an opportunity to offset slowing sales.
This comes after the firm reported its first annual drop in EV sales in over a decade.
In 2024, India's electric car sales neared 100,000 units against China's 11 million, emphasizing the untapped potential of this emerging market for global EV manufacturers like Tesla.
