TCS' integrated solution digitalizes over 1.5 lakh post offices
India's leading tech giant, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has helped in revamping over 1.5 lakh post offices in the country. An integrated solution has been deployed by TCS to digitalize and modernize the post offices. The Mumbai-based company and India Post had struck a multi-year deal of over Rs. 1,100 crore in 2013 for an end-to-end IT modernization program.
This is one of the world's largest SAP implementations
The aim of the deal was to equip Indian post offices with all the modern technologies and systems in order to provide seamless and effective services to the consumers. The solution deployed by TCS supports more than 5L employees, over 40,000 concurrent users and processes more than 3 million postal transactions/day, becoming one of the world's largest SAP implementations.
Core System Integration program has been designed, implemented by TCS
In a statement, TCS said, "At the heart of this transformation is the Core System Integration (CSI) program designed and implemented by TCS." "This involved deploying an integrated ERP solution catering to mail operations, finance and accounting, and HR functions, and connects its vast network of more than 1.5 lakh post offices, making this the largest distributed e-postal network in the world," TCS mentioned.
TCS has built tracking system, set-up multi-lingual call center
Further, the company has also implemented Point of Sale (PoS) solution with over 80,000 terminals in 24,000 post offices. TCS has built a web-based consignment tracking system on and set up a multi-lingual call center. According to the company, "An important objective of the transformation is to use the department's nation-wide reach to drive financial inclusion and accessibility of citizen services in remote areas."
Gramin Dak Sevaks now use DARPAN 1 for remote villages
In order to accomplish the objective, TCS has over 1.3L DARPAN 1, which is a hand-held device that the Gramin Dak Sevaks can use to give postal services, insurance, and cash management services in remote villages, even with no Internet/network connectivity. Debashis Ghosh, TCS Business Group Head (Public Services), also shared his views on the new solution by the company and its importance.
