Sensex closes at 56,976 points, Nifty settles below 17,100

The stock market in India ended on a sluggish note but off its early lows on Monday, as the Sensex settled at 56,975.99 points and the Nifty stood at 17,069.1.
The midcap stocks also witnessed a bearish run with the Nifty Midcap 50 shedding 48.7 points to settle at 8,120.15 points.

NIFTY METAL, NIFTY PVT BANK and NIFTY MEDIA emerged as the top-performing sectors, rising 0.56%, 0.48%, and 0.41%, respectively.
IndusInd Bank, Coal India, and Power Grid Corp emerged as the top-performing stocks, edging up 4.02%, 2.43%, and 1.89%, respectively.
Apollo Hospital, Eicher Motors, and Titan Company lead the negative pack on Monday, plummeting 3.33%, 3.27%, and 2.94%, respectively.

On Monday, the Asian markets traded in the red with the Shanghai Composite Index, the Hang Seng, and Nikkei plunging 2.41%, 4.01%, and 0.11% to 3,047.06 points, 21,089.39 points, and 26,818.53 points, respectively. Meanwhile, in the US market, NASDAQ fell by 4.17% to 12,334.64 points.

INR declines by 0.08% against the US Dollar
On Monday, the Indian rupee (INR) declined 0.08% against the US Dollar to end at Rs. 76.49 in the forex trade.
The prices of the gold and silver futures finished in red. While the gold futures dropped to Rs. 51,025, silver futures tumbled to settle at Rs. 62,591.
Also, the crude oil futures slipped 4.24% to $101.62 per barrel.
