Han Jong-hee was a Samsung veteran, having joined the company nearly four decades ago.
He started his career in the displays division and was made co-CEO three years ago.
Under his leadership, Samsung Electronics became an industry leader in TVs, outpacing competitors like Sony Group Corp.
AI initiatives
Han's role in AI integration at Samsung
Most recently, Han spearheaded efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into Samsung's Galaxy devices. This was part of a larger plan to ride on the expected wave of demand for AI capabilities in daily life.
Under his leadership, the company started installing AI chips into its refrigerators, washing machines, and vacuum cleaners.
Company outlook
Samsung's challenges and future plans
Han's death comes at a critical time for Samsung as it strives to compete with SK Hynix Inc. in AI memory and deal with sluggish demand for consumer electronics.
Last week, during Samsung's annual shareholders' meeting, Han acknowledged the company's challenges and said that 2025 would be a difficult year.
He also said that the company would pursue mergers and acquisitions to address growth concerns.
