Keep kids away if you're concerned, Roblox CEO tells parents
What's the story
Gaming platform Roblox's CEO Dave Baszucki has advised parents to restrict their kids' access to the platform if they feel uncomfortable.
The statement comes amid concerns over explicit content and bullying on the site.
Despite the issues, Baszucki stressed millions of users still have positive experiences on Roblox.
Speaking exclusively to BBC News, he said, "My first message would be, if you're not comfortable, don't let your kids be on Roblox."
Safety protocols
User base and safety measures
Roblox is a dominant gaming platform, exceeding Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation's combined monthly users.
In 2024, it had over 80 million daily players, with roughly 40% being under 13.
Despite the impending Online Safety Act in the UK, which seeks to shield children from online harms, Baszucki was confident about Roblox's safety measures.
He said any negative incident is one too many and the company actively monitors for bullying and harassment while filtering inappropriate content.
Conduct enforcement
Approach to user communication and conduct
Roblox has strict rules against disruptive behavior, with players getting temporarily suspended or banned for violating the guidelines.
The platform uses advanced AI systems to analyze all communications between members, with flagged content going through further investigation.
In November last year, the platform banned direct messaging for users under 13 years old, as well as participation in "hangout experiences" featuring player chat.
Safety concerns
Concerns over safety filters and content recommendations
Despite the safety measures, BBC was able to create two fake accounts on unlinked devices - one aged 15 and other 27 - and exchange messages between them.
While Roblox's filters detected attempts to move conversations off-platform, they didn't prevent reworded requests for external chats or suggestions for adult games.
Even some game titles recommended by Roblox to an 11-year-old kid raised concerns over their appropriateness.
Safety assurance
Commitment to user safety and content regulation
Defending Roblox's safety measures, Baszucki said the platform doesn't condone any form of image-sharing and is taking steps beyond legal requirements to prevent such behavior.
He admitted it is difficult to foster friendships among young users while preventing potential harm but was confident Roblox could balance both aspects effectively in the future.
Future plans
Roblox's evolution and future aspirations
Baszucki co-founded the platform in 2004 as an educational software provider. But, he soon realized kids were using it to create virtual worlds.
This gave birth to Roblox, a name derived from "robot" and "blocks."
The platform has evolved into a digital economy where players use Robux (Roblox's currency) to buy accessories and unlock content.
Looking ahead, Baszucki envisions Roblox evolving into a Metaverse-style experience where users navigate daily life in avatar form.
