Pernod India's legal chief heads to Google amid regulatory challenges
Bijoya Roy, the Chief Legal Officer of Pernod Ricard in India, has resigned from her role amid several legal and regulatory challenges faced by the French liquor giant. The resignation comes at a critical time for Pernod in the Indian market, a region that contributes to a significant portion of its global sales. She is now set to join Google as its chief India counsel in November.
Roy's role in the company
Roy, who joined Pernod in 2021 and was a key member of its leadership team, also headed the company's compliance division. Neither Google nor Pernod have responded to queries from Reuters regarding this matter.
Market position and ongoing legal issues
India is a significant market for Pernod, contributing to one-tenth of its group sales. As per Euromonitor, Pernod holds a 16% market share by volume in India's $35 billion spirits market, with popular brands like Chivas and Absolut. However, the company is currently involved in several investigations and legal cases during Roy's tenure. One such case involves a $250 million tax demand following accusations of undervaluation of imports, which Pernod is currently contesting.
Pernod faces criminal proceedings and antitrust cases in India
In New Delhi, Pernod is facing criminal proceedings over allegations that it gained market share by encouraging retailers to stock more of its products, in exchange for assistance in securing loans to bid for store licenses. As a result of these allegations, the firm is prohibited from selling its products in the city. In addition to these challenges, Pernod is also dealing with two antitrust cases in India. The company maintains that it is committed to complying with domestic law.
