Defence canteens stop selling Ramdev's Amla juice
After the Central Food Lab in Kolkata issued an adverse report about the Patanjali amla juice, the Ministry of Defence's Canteen Stores Department discontinued sales of the product. The lab report called the product "unfit for consumption." All 34 CSD depots have been asked to return the products. The lab was the same one which found lead and magnesium in Nestle products.
The Canteen Stores Department
The CSD is a department within the Ministry of Defence which sell 5,300 products ranging from biscuits and beer to shampoos and cars to 12 million consumers through retail outlets. Consumers are staff and families of the army, navy and the air force, and ex-servicemen. On an average CSDs account for 5-7% of annual revenue for consumer product companies.
Patanjali does not comment
This is not the first time Patanjali food products have been in trouble. Samples of Patanjali's mustard oil, salt, besan and honey had failed quality tests in 2012. They were also hauled-up for misleading advertising. Patanjali did not comment on this latest development.
