Fixed broadband speeds nearly rose by 50%: Ookla
Global Internet speed-testing leader Ookla noted that mobile Internet speeds in India rose modestly while fixed broadband speeds increased dramatically.
At the start of 2017, average mobile download speed was 7.65Mbps; but heading to the year-end, the speed is 8.80Mbps (November).
It said, "Average fixed broadband download speed in January was 12.12Mbps. As of November, it's at 18.82Mbps, a close to 50% jump."
Information
Which countries topped the list?
According to Ookla's latest global report, as of November, Norway took the "No. 1 spot" in terms of mobile Internet speeds, with an average download speed of 62.66Mbps. Meanwhile, Singapore was ranked first in the fixed broadband speeds category with 153.85Mbps average download speed.
Future
Looking forward to watching how Indian market grows: Ookla head
Ookla Co-Founder & General Manager, Doug Suttles, said both fixed broadband and mobile Internet speeds are getting faster in India, which is good news for all Indian users irrespective of the operators/plan used to access the Internet.
He added, "India still has a long way to go to catch up with countries...However, we at Ookla are highly optimistic about the capacity for growth."

Ookla computes countries' Internet speeds through Speedtest
An official statement said: "Over 17-billion tests have been taken with Speedtest to date. From our observations in these markets, there are a handful of factors that consistently tend to drive advances in Internet speeds and performance. These factors also apply to growth in India."
Factors
Factors that drive growth in Internet speeds, performance
Ookla stated the "first and foremost" factor for improving Internet speed and performance is sufficient infrastructure. Quality and strength of networks are the most important for faster speeds.
Secondly, growth in competition is also crucial; if operators compete for providing the best plans and fastest speeds, it encourages each other to progress.
Thirdly, deployment of new technologies to boost network performance is also necessary.
