Volvo reveals all-new XC90 with Formula 1 tech: Details here
Volvo has revealed a new avatar of its flagship sports utility vehicle, the XC90. The new SUV comes with a revamped design, new colors and promises an enhanced fuel efficiency and braking technology. It is said to be coming to India at the price of the current XC90, by the end of this year. Here's all about the new XC90.
Subtle design tweaks, new colors on offer
Visually, the new Volvo XC90 looks pretty similar to the existing one, except for the new front grille and alloy wheels. The headlights of the vehicle that remind of 'Thor's hammer' remain untouched, but you do get some new color options over the existing ones, like the new 'Thunder Gray' and 'Birch Light Metallic'. Apart from this, there aren't much changes on the outside.
New seating options and features inside
Volvo XC90 comes with a new 6-seat option, with two seats lined up in three rows. This is a major improvement over the current 5 and 7-seater options and will be welcomed by the buyers. Also, buyers will get support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the infotainment system of the vehicle and option to choose a new "wool blend" material for upholstery.
Powertrain improved with tech from Formula 1
Under the hood, the new XC90 will be available in the existing IC engines. However, the motor is mated to a new mid hybrid powertrain where the vehicle utilizes kinetic energy recovery braking system, a Formula 1 tech, to assist engine combustion. So, basically, the vehicle will use the energy usually lost in braking for powering the motor.
Also, 15% fuel savings have been claimed
Volvo also claims the engine of the new XC90 has been optimized for reduced emissions and 15% fuel savings. Notably, the car also comes with Oncoming Lane Mitigation system that applies brakes on seeing a vehicle coming from the front.
Pricing and availability in India
The new model, with B5 and B6 variants, is expected to hit the Indian markets by the end of 2019, as per CarDekho. There's no word on the pricing or exact specs of the India-specific model, but the vehicle is expected to be priced in the same Rs. 80 lakh - Rs. 1.3 crore price bracket of the current version.
