Most iPhone models banned in China: Here's why
A Chinese court has ordered Apple to stop importing and selling most iPhone models in the country. The decision comes as the latest turn in the ongoing legal battle between the Cupertino giant and Qualcomm. It could affect Apple's future in the world's largest smartphone market, but for now, the company has claimed that all its devices remain on sale. Here's more.
Why Apple banned from selling iPhones?
Apple and Qualcomm have long been embroiled in a legal battle, but this particular case, filed in 2017, relates to patent infringement. Qualcomm had claimed that Apple violated its patents related to photo resizing and managing apps on touchscreen. On November 30, the Fuzhou Intermediate People's Court ruled in favour of the chip-maker and issued the order barring the import and sale of iPhones.
Which iPhone models are banned?
As part of the order, all iPhones ranging from iPhone 6 to iPhone X would be banned from selling in the country. The latest models are not included in the case, because they were not released at the time when the case was filed.
However, it's unlikely when the ban would come into effect
Having said that, it is important to note it is still unclear when the ban would come into effect. Apple, on its part, has claimed the entire portfolio of iPhones remains on sale at the moment, and it has filed a request of reconsideration with the court. It even downplayed the significance of the ruling, telling CNBC that iOS 12 avoids the patent conflict.
Apple's statement on the matter
"Qualcomm's effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world," the company said in a statement to Reuters.
Still, the ban could affect Apple in a major market
The ban, if enforced, could affect Apple's business in the world's biggest smartphone market. According to the Washington Post, the country makes up a fifth of Apple's annual revenue, which means its sales, which are already said to be low, could witness a significant decline. But then, the outcome of the matter still remains unknown, considering Apple has already initiated the appeal process.
