Terminated Meta employees allege layoffs were not based on performance
What's the story
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is facing the ire of its employees over a string of layoffs. The tech giant announced plans to fire over 3,000 workers.
However, a number of employees have publicly slammed the company's leadership for their handling of the firings.
They contend that their terminations were not performance-based as Meta had claimed.
Dispute
Employees refute Meta's claims
One anonymous employee told Business Insider, "The hardest part is Meta publicly stating they're cutting low performers, so it feels like we have the scarlet letter on our backs." The employee emphasized that those dismissed were not underperformers, challenging the company's narrative surrounding job cuts.
Experience overlooked
Experienced employees among those laid off
On Blind, a platform for verified tech workers, a recently dismissed Meta employee revealed that people with almost a decade of experience were among those let go.
The post also claimed that "dozens of people with pristine history and exceeds rating" who had taken parental or medical leave were also dismissed.
This has raised questions about the legality and fairness of Meta's layoff strategy.
Workforce reduction
Layoffs target 5% of its workforce
The layoffs announced by Meta will impact around 5% of its entire workforce, which was 72,400 employees in September last year.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg had earlier warned that 2024 and 2025 would be "challenging years" for the company.
Nevertheless, the firm continues to push forward with its AI and metaverse projects.
