'That was sexism...': Melinda Gates exposes gender bias in philanthropy
Melinda French Gates, renowned philanthropist and former wife of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has opened up about her encounters with sexism during their joint philanthropic endeavors. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed that despite their 25-year partnership in philanthropy, she often found herself sidelined in favor of her ex-husband. This bias was evident even when interacting with global leaders who would default to addressing Bill first.
Overcoming bias and ensuring her voice is heard
Gates expressed her frustration at the assumption that she knew less about philanthropy than her ex-husband, despite their long-standing collaboration. To counter this bias, she adopted a proactive approach by initiating conversations in meetings. This strategy ensured that her expertise was recognized and her voice heard. She also highlighted instances where male speakers were given precedence over female ones during discussions.
Gates's enthusiasm for future philanthropic endeavors
Looking forward, Gates expressed excitement about her future philanthropic projects. She emphasized that being the sole decision-maker now feels different and quite good. "Quite honestly, it feels quite good. When I get a meeting now, I know it's because of me," she said. Her approach to "microfeminism" in her work involves ensuring that women's voices are also heard during discussions. This commitment to gender equality is a key aspect of her ongoing and future philanthropic initiatives.
'Feels like now is the right time...'
Since departing from the foundation with $12.5B dedicated to philanthropy, Melinda has shifted her focus to her own charitable organization—Pivotal Ventures. She is now concentrating on women's health issues and has publicly supported US Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential campaign. She has expressed her enthusiasm for this new phase in her career, stating, "I feel extraordinarily energized about the work ahead. It feels like now is the right time." This change follows her high-profile divorce from Bill in 2021.
