Karnataka unveils new cyber security policy to combat cybercrimes
The Karnataka government has introduced a comprehensive cyber security policy, aimed at combating increasing rates of cybercrimes and protecting the state's digital infrastructure. The strategy focuses on key areas like awareness and education, skill development, promotion of startups, and more. "The Government of Karnataka, recognizing the rising importance of cybersecurity, has meticulously crafted this policy to establish a resilient and secure cyberspace for our citizens," stated Priyank Kharge, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and Information Technology and Biotechnology.
Aligning with national and international efforts
Kharge emphasized that the policy aligns with national and international efforts to counter cyber threats. This reflects Karnataka's proactive approach in this area. The strategy is divided into two parts: one aimed at creating a robust cybersecurity ecosystem involving all segments of society, including industry, public, academia, startups, and the government. Another strategy is focused on enhancing the cybersecurity posture of the state's IT assets. The first part will be public; the second is for state's IT teams and departments.
Collaborative effort behind policy formulation
The policy was collaboratively drafted by multiple departments including the Department of Electronics, IT, BT and S&T; Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (e-Governance); and the Home Department. It was done in consultation with relevant stakeholders from both government and private sectors. The Indian Institute of Science reviewed the policy. This institution is also the anchor institute for the state's K-tech Centre of Excellence for Cyber Security (CySecK).
Partnership with CISCO for skilling program
Alongside the policy launch, Kharge also announced a skilling program in partnership with network giant CISCO. "This partnership with CISCO is a testament to our commitment to fostering a secure digital environment. By training 40,000 individuals, with a special emphasis on empowering women, we are not only addressing the skills gap but also promoting inclusivity in the tech sector," Kharge said. This initiative underscores the government's dedication toward creating an inclusive and secure digital space.
