Reliance Jio launches 25,000km-long submarine cable system
Reliance Jio Infocomm has unveiled the Asia-Africa-Europe (AAE-1) submarine cable system, comprising telecommunication and internet cables on seabed that carry signals across the oceans. The system deploys 100Gbps transmission technology with a capacity of 40 Terabits. Jio said it will cater the growing demand for video-centric data bandwidth and support all types of communications, content, and applications in India and beyond.
Data needs of world's second-largest telecom market are increasing
The submarine cable system, stretching over 25,000km from France's Marseille to Hong Kong, has 21 cable landings. Leading telecom players from Europe, the Mid-East, and Asia have come together for the large scale global project. It comes at a time when India's data needs are increasing as the consumers are getting used to watching videos/TV and streaming music on-the-go.
100Gbps direct connectivity to global markets
The submarine system has Points of Presence (PoP) in Asia's Hong Kong and Singapore and three onward connectivity points in Europe's France, Italy and Greece. The project is expected to offer the "requisite flexibility and diversity" to both customers and carriers. By linking other cable systems and fiber networks, the system will provide direct access to all global hubs.
AAE-1 cable consortium consists of 20 carriers
The AAE-1 project includes carriers like China Unicom, British Telecom, CIL (HyalRoute), Djibouti Telecom, Etisalat, GT5L, Mobily, Omantel, Ooredoo, OTEG, PCCW, PTCL, Reliance Jio, Retelit, Telecom Egypt, TeleYemen, TOT, Viettel, VNPT, and VTC.
