This is the first Indian start-up to secure NASA contract
Pixxel, a Bengaluru-based space data start-up, has made history by becoming the first Indian company to secure a contract with NASA. The deal is part of NASA's $476 million Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition Program and will run until November 2028. This achievement marks a significant milestone for India's private space sector, which was opened up to private enterprises in 2020.
Pixxel to provide hyperspectral Earth observation data
Under the contract, Pixxel will supply NASA, the US government, and academic institutions with hyperspectral Earth observation data. This type of imaging captures data across hundreds of narrow wavelengths, providing a more detailed analysis of environmental conditions. As stated by Pixxel's CEO Awais Ahmed, their technology aims to serve as a "health monitor for the planet," giving crucial information to address challenges like climate change and other environmental issues.
Pixxel's advanced satellites to revolutionize hyperspectral imaging
Pixxel is preparing to launch a series of advanced satellites, including its new "Fireflies" satellites. These will feature the highest-resolution hyperspectral imaging ever deployed. The satellites will provide thorough global coverage with their 40-kilometer swath width and 24-hour revisit frequency, providing near-real-time monitoring capabilities anywhere on Earth. The start-up aims to expand its constellation to 24 satellites, making hyperspectral data more accessible and commercially viable for various stakeholders across industries and governments worldwide.
Pixxel's contract with NASA boosts India's space sector
The contract with NASA is a significant achievement for Pixxel and the Indian private space sector. It places Pixxel alongside global companies like Planet Labs, ICEYE, and BlackSky that provide critical data for NASA's earth science research. This partnership positions Pixxel to drive innovations in earth observation technologies, potentially revolutionizing how we monitor and protect our planet. The deal also underscores India's growing influence in the international space economy.
Pixxel's journey and future plans in the space sector
Since its inception, Pixxel has made significant strides in the space sector. In December 2022, the company launched its first hyperspectral satellite, "Anand," and plans to launch six more satellites soon. Backed by major investors like Google, Lightspeed, and Radical Ventures, Pixxel has raised over $70 million to fuel its ambitious plans. The company recently introduced its Earth Observation Studio, "Aurora," which aims to make satellite imagery analysis more accessible and democratize access to high-resolution satellite data for various applications.
