HMD Global: News

HMD Global Oy or HMD is a Finnish company that’s behind the famous brand of Nokia phones. Around 2010, Nokia was struggling to keep its market dominance and was succeeded by Apple and Samsung eventually. Four years later, it was sold to Microsoft. Following internal tiffs, the deal fell through, and that’s when it was sold to HMD Global (established in 2016 by Jean-Francois Baril) and FIH Mobile (a Chinese handset manufacturing and Integrator services company). The consumer electronics company, through a licensing agreement, has exclusive rights to the Nokia brand. In its smartphones, HMD uses the Android operating system, via a partnership with Google under the Android One program. Meanwhile, its feature phones use the Series 30+ platform or the Firefox OS-derived KaiOS (the most recent one).
