HAL to develop 'Aravalli' high-power engines for next-gen helicopters
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd (SAFHAL) have announced a partnership to design, develop, manufacture, supply, and support a new-generation high-power engine named 'Aravalli.' The engine is under development for the 13-ton Medium Lift class Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH), both of which are under development by HAL.
'Aravalli' engine symbolizes India's self-reliance in critical technologies
The name 'Aravalli,' derived from the mountain range of India, represents the country's aspirations for "aatmanirbharta" (self-reliance) in critical engine technologies, as revealed by HAL in a press release. The partnership with SAFHAL is seen as a significant step toward achieving technological self-reliance in India's aerospace and defense sector.
Collaboration aims to enhance operational capabilities of helicopters
HAL Chairman and Managing Director C B Ananthakrishnan, stated that the collaboration with SAFHAL will enhance the operational capabilities of the IMRH and DBMRH platforms, and contribute to the broader goal of indigenous development of critical defense technologies. "SAFHAL, a joint venture between Safran Helicopter Engines SAS and HAL, is dedicated to the design, development, production, sales and support of new generation helicopter engines in India, and marks a significant milestone in India's aerospace and defence sector." the release said.
SAFHAL to leverage parent companies' expertise in engine technologies
Under the contract, SAFHAL will collaborate with its parent companies on advanced engine technologies to ensure superior performance, reliability and operational efficiency. This partnership involves state-of-the-art design, advanced manufacturing processes and rigorous testing protocols to meet global standards. The engines are being designed to operate in diverse and challenging environments where these helicopters will be deployed.
Future plans include extension to civil market
Future plans for the 'Aravalli' engine include an extension to the civil market for offshore operations, utility, VVIP transport etc., followed by Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) activities. This latest collaboration between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines builds on a long-standing relationship that began with the Artouste engines for Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, and continued with the Shakti engine for Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH).
