    What's the story

The Centre has appointed a consultant for formulating an automobile policy with a focus on clean technology; it may pave the way for adoption of eco-friendly vehicles.

Heavy Industries and Public Sector Enterprises Minister, Anant Geete, said Department of Heavy Industry took the initiative towards developing the policy that would take into account all eco-friendly mobility options like electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells.

    Details

Auto policy formulation still in early stage

Anant Geete said the formulation of the automobile policy is still in a very early stage and discussion with the auto industry is yet to begin. He added, "It (formulation) is at a primary stage right now,"

The Union Minister also confirmed that a consultant for studying the matter has also been roped in by the Department of Heavy Industry.

    Policy

Consultant to explore how the policy could be formulated

Anant Geete said once the department receives a report from the consultant, discussions regarding the policy would be held with all the stakeholders, including the automotive industry.

Though he didn't share any details about who they have hired as the consultant, Geete said, "We have told the consultant to explore how the auto policy can be formulated and suggest ways towards the same."

    Quote

No decision on policy yet: Geete

Anant Geete said: "The consultant has been tasked with evaluating all options, including clean technologies like electric (vehicles) and hydrogen (fuel cells). There is no decision yet on the auto policy. The consultant has not even discussed it with the auto industry now."

    Clean Technology

Mass adoption of eco-friendly vehicles in India

The development for the auto industry comes at a critical time as it is going to adopt stricter BS-VI emissions standards from April 2020. It is also preparing for a shift towards electric vehicles by 2030.

India currently lacks the required infrastructure for adopting electric vehicles on a mass level. But the government is likely to focus on encouraging people to use clean technology.
