How to enable and use UPI Circle on Google Pay
Google has introduced a new feature, UPI Circle, on its Google Pay app. The feature is designed to simplify digital transactions for individuals who either lack access to a bank account or are reluctant to use digital payment methods. Developed in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI Circle aims to transition cash-dependent users toward digital payments by enabling trusted friends or family members to assist them.
UPI Circle: A tool for delegated digital payments
The UPI Circle allows primary account holders to share their UPI accounts and transaction rights with secondary users. This function is particularly beneficial for those without a bank account or who find managing digital payments challenging. Unlike traditional methods, UPI Circle enables transactions through the primary user's account, eliminating the need for secondary users to link their own bank accounts.
UPI Circle offers 2 types of delegation
The UPI Circle feature provides two types of delegation: Full and Partial. In Full Delegation, the primary user sets a monthly limit up to ₹15,000, allowing the secondary user to make payments independently within that limit without further approvals. In contrast, Partial Delegation requires the primary user's approval for each transaction initiated by the secondary user. This ensures they are aware of and involved in each transaction.
UPI Circle enhances security with cool-off period
To enhance security, UPI Circle includes a 30-minute cool-off period after linking a secondary user during which no transactions can be made. Google suggests that this feature will be especially useful for families where older members may not be comfortable with digital payments, or for individuals managing payments for dependents or domestic help. The rollout of the UPI Circle feature is currently underway across both Android and iOS apps of Google Pay.
How to use UPI Circle on Google Pay
To use UPI Circle, the primary user needs an active bank account linked to Google Pay. The secondary user should have a UPI ID and their mobile number must be saved in the primary user's contact list. To make payments from the primary user's account, the secondary user will need to open their UPI app and tap the QR code icon. The primary user then accesses the UPI Circle section by tapping their profile picture or initials on Google Pay.
UPI Circle allows tracking of payment requests
Once the UPI Circle is set up, the secondary user can make payments independently within the preset monthly limit of ₹15,000. Whenever a secondary user initiates a payment request, the primary user will need to approve or deny it based on the details provided. Both primary and secondary users can track their payment requests in real-time through the UPI Circle section in their profiles. This feature also provides a history of all completed transactions for added transparency.
