Dixon Technologies to manufacture Google Pixel 8 smartphone in India
Alphabet Inc, Google's parent company, has reportedly selected Dixon Technologies, a local contract manufacturer in India, to produce its high-end Pixel 8 smartphones. The Economic Times reports that the trial production phase is already underway. The first batch of these made-in-India devices is anticipated to hit the market by September. Google's decision to manufacture in India is aimed at meeting the demands of the domestic market and potentially for exports as well.
Google is diversifying its supply chain away from China
Google has been working to ramp up its smartphone production and begin manufacturing Pixel smartphones in India between April and June. The decision emphasizes the tech giant's dedication to diversifying its supply chain away from China and tapping into India's booming smartphone market. The latest move comes after a year-long discussion with various potential manufacturing partners, before finalizing Dixon Technologies. Dixon Technologies is an NSE-listed Indian electronics manufacturing services company, based in Noida.
Google's commitment to India's digital growth
This development is in line with Google CEO Sundar Pichai's previous statement from October. Pichai had said, "We shared plans at 'GoogleforIndia' to manufacture Pixel smartphones locally and expect the first device to roll out in 2024. We're committed to being a trusted partner in India's digital growth — appreciate the support for Make In India." This indicates Google's commitment toward supporting and contributing to India's digital expansion.
