'Aiming to add 500GW of renewable energy by 2030': Modi
What's the story
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has detailed an ambitious energy plan for India, during his virtual address at the India Energy Week 2025.
He stressed that the next two decades will be crucial for the country's growth.
"The coming two decades are extremely crucial for India, and in the next five years, we are set to achieve several major milestones," he said.
Renewable commitment
India aims to add 500GW renewable energy capacity by 2030
Among the goals set for 2030, Modi emphasized a massive increase in renewable energy capacity.
"By 2030, we aim to add 500 GW of renewable energy capacity," he announced.
He also announced that the Indian Railways has set a net zero carbon emission target for the same year.
PM Modi emphasized that India's energy transition is a global game-changer, not just a national initiative.
Hydrogen production
India to produce 5MMT of green hydrogen annually
The PM also shared India's aim to produce five million metric tons of green hydrogen every year by 2030.
The goal fits into the country's larger sustainability agenda and efforts to cut carbon emissions, he said.
The production of green hydrogen, a clean-burning fuel, is expected to play a key role in India's transition toward a more sustainable energy future.
Solar achievement
India ranks 3rd in global solar power generation
Modi also highlighted India's achievements in renewable energy, saying that the country is now the third-largest solar power-generating nation in the world.
He also said that India's non-fossil fuel energy capacity has tripled over time.
"Today, India is the third-largest solar power generating nation in the world. Our non-fossil fuel energy capacity has tripled," he said during his address at the event.
Biofuel potential
India's biofuel industry set for rapid growth
The PM also spoke about the potential of India's biofuel industry, which is backed by a sustainable feedstock of 500 million metric tons.
He said that during India's G20 presidency, the Global Biofuel Alliance was launched and continues to expand.
"India's biofuel industry is poised for rapid growth, backed by a sustainable feedstock of 500 million metric tons," he said.
Energy pillars
PM Modi identifies 5 key pillars of India's energy strategy
Modi listed five key pillars of India's energy strategy: efficient utilization of abundant resources, fostering innovation, strong economic foundation and political stability for long-term investments, strategic geographical location enhancing India's role in global energy trade, and commitment to global sustainability.
He said these elements are critical for driving not just India's growth but also impacting the global economy.
