GM to lay off nearly 1,700 workers in the US
General Motors (GM) has announced plans to lay off approximately 1,695 employees at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, US. The information was disclosed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice released earlier this week. The layoffs will be implemented in two phases, beginning on November 18 and continuing into January next year.
First phase to affect over 900 workers
The first round of layoffs, set to commence on November 18, will impact a total of 936 workers. This includes the temporary layoff of 686 full-time employees, and the termination of 250 temporary staff members. The details were revealed in a company filing submitted to the state of Kansas, and reported by Automotive News.
Second phase of layoffs to begin in January
The second phase of GM's layoffs is scheduled to start on January 12, during which an additional 759 full-time employees will be temporarily laid off. The company has not yet provided a comment on the specifics of these upcoming layoffs. This announcement follows GM's decision in May to halt production of the Cadillac XT4 post-January 2025 at the Kansas plant, leading to further job cuts until production resumes later that year.
GM's layoffs extend beyond Kansas plant
In addition to the layoffs at the Fairfax Assembly plant, GM announced in August that it would be laying off over 1,000 salaried employees from its software and service units worldwide. This move is part of a broader strategy by the company to streamline operations amid changing market conditions.
