What's the story

In a bid to take on Amazon, Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart has launched its own OTT content streaming service. The platform, dubbed Flipkart Videos, offers a massive assortment of premium movies and TV shows for free and comes as part of the main Flipkart app rather than a dedicated video-streaming app. Here's everything about it.

Content

Flipkart Videos offers Bollywood and entertainment content

Accessed from the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner, Flipkart Videos provide unlimited access to premium entertainment content, Bollywood movies, and Hindi TV shows. The majority of shows in the service come from Viu, Dice Media, TVF and Arre, while movies are from different production houses, including Viacom's Voot. However, it is worth noting that there are no Hollywood movies/shows in the package.

Use

You don't have to pay anything for Flipkart Videos

The best part about Flipkart Videos is its free availability; you don't have to pay anything to get access to the service. Just install the e-commerce giant's app, log in with your number, swipe right on the home screen and head to the 'Videos' section. There, you'll be prompted to select a few movies, which Flipkart will use to display movies/shows you may like.

Range

Various genres and languages on offer

As for the range of content on offer, you can expect movies and shows covering a plethora of genres, including romance, action, adventure, and drama. Plus, in addition to Hindi videos, you could explore video content in Tamil and Kannada too. Clearly, Flipkart is hoping to lure users by offering more entertaining and localized content.

Goal

Goal to increase shopping spends

The ultimate goal behind Flipkart Videos is to create a certain level of stickiness. Basically, if users would be navigating through the shopping app for browsing entertainment movies/shows, there is a good chance they might stick around and buy something too. Plus, the service makes the app more complete, unlike Amazon, which offers content through a different platform and charges Rs. 1,000/year for it.

Feature #2

Plus, there is the new 'Flipkart Ideas' section

Along with Videos, Flipkart is also adding social feed called 'Flipkart Ideas'. This Instagram-like feed targets the social shopping segment by giving users a way to share the photos of products they purchased from Flipkart with others. Notably, users can also choose to see posts based on their interests in the feed and buy directly from there.
