Government announces Rs. 20 coin: Here's everything you should know
The government announced the first-ever Rs. 20 coin, which will be shaped like a dodecagon, a 12-sided polygon. Apart from this the Centre also released a new series of Re. 1, Rs. 2, Rs. 5, and Rs. 10 coins. The new coins are aimed at helping visually challenged people. Except for Rs. 20, all other coins will be round in shape. Here're more details.
Rs. 20 coins won't have any marks on edges
The new Rs. 20 coins will differ from Rs. 10 coins in various ways. While Rs. 10 coins have a hundred serrations, the Rs. 20 coins will not have any marks on the edges. However, like the Rs. 10 coins it will also be two-toned. The coins, having a diameter of 27 mm, will be made of nickel brass. It will weigh 8.54 grams.
Understanding the components of Rs. 20 coins
The outer ring of the Rs. 20 coin will be made of nickel brass (65% copper, 15% zinc and 20% nickel) whereas the centerpiece will have 75% copper, 20% zinc and 5% nickel as its constituents.
Lion Pillar with "Satyamev Jayate" to be inscribed
The face of the Rs. 20 coins will have the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar. The words "Satyamev Jayate" (Truth always wins) will be inscribed below. The words 'Bharat' in Hindi and 'India' in English will be flanked on the left and right side respectively. The other side of the coins will bear the "Rupee" symbol above the denomination value.
Coin will depict India's agriculture dominance
On the left side of the "Rupee" symbol, design of grains will be inscribed to show India's agricultural dominance. The top right periphery will have Rs. 20 written in Hindi and the bottom right will bear "Twenty Rupees" in English. The year of minting will be visible on the center of the left periphery of the coin.
Government wants to reach every citizen, says PM Modi
The announcement of Rs. 20 coins comes nearly 10 years after the government of India introduced Rs. 10 coins in 2009. Since it was launched, Rs. 10 coins have gone through 13 iterations. Announcing the release, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government wants to reach every citizen. The new coins toe the line of this vision, said PM Modi.
