Disney+ Hotstar launching on April 3, priced at Rs. 1,500/year
Disney++, the dedicated streaming service owned and operated by Disney, is set to be launched in India on April 3. The long-awaited service, and its entire batch of original programming, will debut through Hotstar - another popular OTT service that Disney owns in the country. Here's all you need to know about the service and its cost.
Hotstar to be rebranded as 'Disney+ Hotstar'
Starting April 3, the main Hotstar app will be rebranded into 'Disney+ Hotstar'. The change will upgrade the interface of the app and introduce a new 'Disney+' section that would provide access to all the content Disney+ has on offer in other markets, starting from shows and movies to several originals from the conglomerate.
Subscription price to be increased
With the inclusion of Disney+, the subscription cost of Hotstar is also set to increase. According to TechCrunch, the VIP tier of the app would cost Rs. 399, instead of Rs. 365, annually, while the 'Premium' package would come at Rs. 1,499 instead of Rs. 1,000 per year. Notably, despite these changes, the app will continue to offer free ad-supported content to users.
What you will get with VIP and Premium subscriptions
Following the change, a VIP subscription will get you access to Marvel movies, live sporting events, including the IPL as well as new Bollywood movies and shows produced by Hotstar. Meanwhile, the Premium Tier would include the content of VIP as well as over 100 series and 250 superhero titles, including Disney+ originals, Disney movies, and content from HBO, Fox, Showtime, among others.
Existing subscribers to be upgraded automatically
That said, it is worth noting that the new prices would have to be paid by only those who take Disney+ Hotstar subscription on or after April 3. If you already have a subscription or are about to take it in a day or two, Disney+ will be included in the plan for free and the new fee would apply upon the next renewal.
Hope to offer comfort, happiness in difficult times
"We hope the power of Disney's storytelling, delivered through Hotstar's technology, will help our viewers find moments of comfort, happiness and inspiration during these difficult times," Uday Shankar, President of The Walt Disney Company APAC, said while announcing the India launch of Disney+.
