Dell to track attendance of on-site employees, assign color-coded ratings
What's the story
Dell, the renowned tech giant, is set to launch a controversial system for tracking its employees' on-site attendance, as reported by The Register.
The company plans to implement a "human capital management software" that assigns color-coded ratings to employees based on their frequency of office attendance.
This system will use blue (consistent office attendance), green (regular presence), yellow (some on-site presence), and red (minimal office attendance) flags to indicate varying levels of employee presence in the office.
Controversy
Dell's new system faces opposition from managers
Despite the innovative approach, Dell's new attendance monitoring system has faced resistance from several company managers.
They express concerns that the system could potentially hinder the career growth of remote workers and may even lead to future layoffs.
In response, Dell emphasized the importance of in-person interactions for both the company and its employees, stating that such connections are "critical to drive innovation and value differentiation."
Dell will also monitor VPN connections to verify location of employees.
Policy update
Dell's hybrid work policy and future plans
Dell has recently updated its hybrid work policy, requiring team members in hybrid roles to be on-site at a Dell Technologies office for at least 39 days per quarter. This equates to an average of three days a week.
The company believes that "in-person connections paired with a flexible approach" are essential in the current global technology revolution.
This updated policy is set to take effect from May 13.
