BigBasket to open 600 dark stores to rival Zepto, Blinkit
BigBasket, a Tata-owned company, is preparing to strengthen its position in the quick commerce sector dominated by Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto. The firm plans to establish approximately 600 dark stores (warehouses dedicated to fulfilling online orders) nationwide, according to a report by The Economic Times. These facilities will work in conjunction with existing warehouses to expedite delivery times, and enhance service efficiency. Currently, BigBasket operates around 60 large warehouses throughout India.
Sales target and product expansion
Starting next month, BigBasket aims to achieve $1 billion in sales through its BB Now platform. The platform currently offers 10,000 stock keeping units (SKUs), with plans to expand this range to between 25,000 and 30,000. This expansion is part of BigBasket's strategy to compete with other players in the quick commerce sector.
Shift toward quick commerce business
In the coming weeks, BigBasket will shift its focus solely to the quick commerce business. This strategic move will be led by BB Now. Despite being operational for almost three years, it was only last year that the firm decided to concentrate on this sector. This decision marks a significant change in BigBasket's business model since its inception in 2011.
