Apple's made-in-India iPhone Pro, Pro Max are coming this year
Apple is set to produce its premium iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in India for the first time this year, according to Bloomberg. The production of the iPhone 16 Pro series here, will commence soon after their global unveiling later this year. Foxconn, a key partner of Apple, is preparing to assemble the new flagship devices. The company has already started training thousands of employees at its factory in Tamil Nadu for the same.
Production strategy in India
The decision to manufacture the entire iPhone range in India is a significant milestone for Apple's local strategy, which gained momentum in 2021. This move was facilitated by financial incentives introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attract high-end manufacturing. Despite China remaining the primary production hub for iPhones, Apple is gradually diversifying its operations to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.
iPhone production in India reaches $14 billion
Apple's diversification strategy resulted in the assembly of iPhones worth $14 billion in India, during the fiscal year ending March 2024. This accounts for about 14% of its global production. Insiders also revealed that other partners like Pegatron Corp.'s India unit and the Tata Group could potentially start producing Pro models soon. These high-end models typically feature larger batteries, superior cameras, and titanium bodies, necessitating more specialized production lines.
Market growth and local demand in India
India, with its growing middle class, is becoming an increasingly important market for Apple. CEO Tim Cook visited India in 2023 to inaugurate the first two Apple stores in the country. By the end of this year, iPhones manufactured in India are expected to meet local demand. Local assembly could potentially reduce the prices of Pro models by up to 10%, compared with imported devices that are subject to import duties.
Apple plans to export India-made iPhones
Despite potential price reductions, the cost of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max in India will remain higher than in some overseas markets due to imports of expensive components, and local taxes. Apple plans to export most of the Pro and Pro Max models manufactured in India to Europe, Middle East, and the US. This is because demand for these high-end versions is relatively lower in India.
