Apple lays off 100 employees in digital services division
Apple has made a significant move by laying off approximately 100 employees from its services group. This decision is part of a strategic shift in the company's priorities for this crucial division, reported Bloomberg, citing insiders who wished to remain anonymous. The affected employees were part of various teams within Senior Vice President Eddy Cue's services group.
Apple Books team faces major layoffs
The layoffs primarily affected engineering roles, with the most significant cuts being made to the team responsible for the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore. Other services teams, including those managing Apple News, also faced job cuts. Despite these changes, media reports indicate that new features will continue to be added to the Books app over time.
Apple's strategic shift: Books app not a priority
Apple has reportedly deprioritized the Books app, no longer viewing it as a significant component of its services lineup. While layoffs are uncommon at Apple, the company has recently made significant cuts. Earlier this year, hundreds of employees were let go as Apple discontinued its self-driving car project and its efforts to develop microLED displays. Last week, Apple also divided its App Store team into two separate groups but no jobs were cut as part of the restructuring.
