CEA Arvind Subramanian gets one-year extension

    What's the story

The government has granted a one-year extension to Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian, whose term was to end in October.

The announcement comes even as the economy dipped to a three-year low (5.7%) in Q1 of FY 2017-18.

Subramanian was actively involved in the drafting of the GST Act.

He had succeeded Raghuram Rajan in 2014, after the latter quit to become RBI governor.

    Personal

Who is Arvind Subramanian? A profile

Subramanian is a St Stephen and IIM-Ahmedabad alumnus. He then got an M.Phil and D.Phil from Oxford University and was a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. In 2011, Foreign Policy magazine named him one of the world's top 100 global thinkers.

    Secret

Balance is key to maintaining responsibilities well, says Subramanian

Subramanian, who lives in a two-storey, six-bedroom house in Delhi's New Moti Bagh, says one of the trickiest things about his profile is maintaining a balance: a consummate insider plus an innovative outsider.

He feels he has done it well enough.

The CEA is now planning to produce a "big book" on global development, on the lines of Jared Diamond's 'Guns, Germs, and Steel'.
